SURAT THANI:-- Samui police have made a quick arrest of a man charged in the robbery and attempted rape of a young Russian tourist in Mae Nam, reports Thaivisa News.

A Phunphin man has admitted to four other similar offences, investigators said.

When faced with the evidence the alleged attempted rapist broke down claiming he robbed the victim to get money for his two children.

The vicious attack on the holiday island took place at night on Wednesday last week as Miss Marina Glagoliva, 32,was walking in the area close to the Phu Khao Thong temple.

A tall man on a motorbike stopped and leapt on her and took 20,000 baht she was carrying. He then grabbed her by the throat and attempted to drag her into the undergrowth and rape her.

Only the yelling of the spirited young Russian saved her as the startled assailant escaped into the night on his bike.

Investigators of the Samui police quickly discovered that the likely attacker was a man called Seksan (alias Joe) Thongphijit who was working as a construction worker on a site nearby. They went to arrest him but he had fled the island in panic.

Further investigations led officers to Seksan's house on the mainland in Phunphin, where he was arrested at his lodgings along with sports clothing police claim was worn in the attack and a knife.

Miss Glagoliva had no difficulty identifying her assailant Wednesday, said investigator Paitoon Krajajang of the Samui police. When faced with the evidence Seksan burst into tears saying he was so sorry for what he had done.

He claimed he had robbed the tourist to get money for his two children as cash from construction work was not sufficient.

He admitted to police that he was also responsible for four other similar cases though it was not immediately known where these took place. He was charged and remanded in custody.

About 30 people gathered at a Koh Samui police station Sunday to demand the arrest of a Myanmar man they accuse of sexually abusing a young child. Police said the suspect was cooperating but had been released for lack of evidence.

SAMUI — An angry mob gathered at a police station on Koh Samui last night because they believed officers released a Myanmar man who raped a young girl.

Dozens of vendors from Chaweng Walking Street went to protest for an hour in front of the Bo Phud Police Station on Sunday night because they thought the perpetrator of an assault on a 4-year-old girl had been allowed to flee the island.

DSDW regulates homeless people, beggars in Ko Samui Island

SURAT THANI, 30 March 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Social Development and Welfare (DSDW) is continuing its second day of regulating beggars and homeless people in Ko Samui Island, after reaching an agreement on the new draft Beggars Control Act, says the DSDW chief.

DSDW Director-General Puttipat Lertchaowasit presided over the guideline meeting for persons under the dependency protection system development, with cooperation from the Ko Samui City Municipality.

From his observations, he revealed that the conditions of persons with dependency in Ko Samui Island are not severe and controllable, with no beggars found. Field observations had instead identified the homeless in the area as street performers.

This meeting will seek to formulate the regulation procedures for beggars, elaborated through the municipality's engaging role, according to the new draft of Beggars Control Act, which will provide support to persons in need.

Authorities are required to work together to develop the working plan of the persons with dependency protection program. The DSDW director-general concluded that the campaign will be enforced along with the new act in order to solve the area's homelessness and beggar issue.

Stay out of the sea warn Koh Samui authorities

KOH SAMUI:-- Amid reports of another drowning death, big waves in Samui prompted safety officials to visit Chaweng Beach to warn tourists and locals alike of the dangers, reports Thaivisa News.

As a video clip aired on Facebook showing tourists and locals themselves helping a Burmese man who had got in trouble, authorities went to the popular beach to remind people they should not swim at this time as waves reached 2-3 metres in height.

One jetski operator said that he had rescued several tourists at different locations and said that one later died in hospital.

Despite the fact that red flags and warning signs were in evidence, safety officer Teerawat Maitrisawat said: "parents should be especially vigilant in the holidays. With waves like this it is better not to enter the sea at all. If you do children should not be allowed to go alone."

He added that it was particularly hard to mount rescue operations with the sea in this condition.

A British tourist called Ryan chipped in: "this is my fourth time here and I have seen what the sea can do. It is better to use a swimming pool when it is like this."

Meanwhile public spirited jetski operator Petch said that yesterday he had rescued a total of six different people in three separate incidents and one had later died.

"I always warn people when conditions are like this," he said. "Some don't understand and have a go at me as though I am forbidding them. I explain that the waves will get them so they must be very careful."

Facebook user Suthathip Bewcamwan responsible for the clip posted on her page: "I don't know how many cases there has been today. I think this was a Burmese guy who got in trouble."

KOH PHANGAN:-- Soldiers turned up at a Koh Phangan beach Sunday to take action against a jet ski operator.

In conjunction with local police they removed six jetskis that were operating on Thong Nai Pan beach, reports Daily News.

The jetskis were operating in contravention of ordinances issued to protect the environment

Prapaporn Banthaopol, 42, owner of the operation was taken in for questioning.

The arrest was part of a long running operation to rid the beach of jet skis after locals had complained that the operator was adversely affecting both the tourist trade and marine life of the beach.

Locals said that prawns used by villagers to make gapi or shrimp paste had steadily been disappearing as a result of the jetskis.

Illegal operators face a jail term of six months and a fine of 50,000 baht.

Don’t let your kids backpack in Koh Tao – the clear message from the CH4 documentary

Koh-Tao-burmese-suspects.jpg

SAMUI: -- At 10pm GMT last night Ch4 presented a documentary about six suspicious deaths in just over two years on the Thai island of Koh Tao. The program created by Make Productions had already been aired on Channel News Asia last month, however the UK program was billed to be a less watered down version.

In the main the one hour documentary focused on the murders of Hannah Witheridge and David Miller. One point that did come across was that Miss Witheridge and Mr Miller met on Koh Tao, it is a common misconception that Koh Tao burmese suspectsthey were travelling together.

The police suggested that a possible motivation for the crime was that, the now convicted migrant workers, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo became aroused by seeing the couple in a romantic embrace on the beach. In fact there has never been any evidence to show there was any such romantic embrace and both Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo have consistently denied ever having seen either of them, together or otherwise.

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo have never denied being on the beach on that fateful night, along with several hundred other people. One aspect that was not mentioned during the program was two other western women who had been mugged by four Thai men on motorbikes the evening before in the very same spot.

The program did focus on the bungled investigation – and questioned the presence of Montriwat Tuwichian, the owner of the AC bar (the victims had been seen in earlier during the evening) and brother of the village headman.

Montriwat was seen in plain view marching over the rope that cordoned off the crime scene, he was also seen with the police next to the bodies. During the program he admitted to being on the scene but said he did not touch anything, he went on to say that the sight of the victims gave him no pleasure whatsoever and went so far as to protests his families innocence telling the crew neither he or his family had anything to do with the crime.

His nephew Nomsod who has been the focus of online investigations was not mentioned in the documentary. Nomsod’s father Head man Worapan Tuwichian offered 700,000 baht to anybody who could prove his family was involved in the murders early on in the investigation. Feared by most, it was a strange offer when the likelihood of anybody presenting evidence against his family, that could result in his son’s death sentence had he committed the murders, is pretty much zero.

No mention of Eight Region Police Command Commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Panya Mamen was made. The policeman who at the very start of the investigation identified the suspect as Montriwat Tuwichian and said evidence which the police collected and examined proved he was involved in the murders before being booted off the case and sent to another part of the country. (Thai PBS Report)

However Major General of the Royal Thai police Suwat Jangvodsuk was part of the program, he told viewers he had apologized to Mr Miller for images of his son appearing on social media and went on to say that the Thai police were not the best in the world but they had done their best, he also said that the DNA tests were done to international standards but could not recall what those standards were, however he did confirm the tests were carried out in a laboratory.

During filming, producer Tom Stone did gain access to the prison for a clandestine interview with Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo, however with a hidden camera and a Burmese translator it was difficult to get a real grip on how steadfastly the men protest their innocence.

Mention was made about the total lack of any DNA samples from either men being on the murder weapon and Andy Hall, from the Migrants Workers Rights Network confirmed that then accused men had confessed to him that they had been brutally tortured into their confession made without lawyers being present, the confessions were later retracted.

Footage of the police interview with Wai Phyo was shown. One aspect of this the viewers may have missed was during the shown footage Wai Phyo was dressed in long jeans, a T-shirt and a long sleeved ‘winter’ top.

Odd attire considering the temperature at that time, especially when the 15+ other people in the room were wearing light clothes and T-shirts. With the allegations of torture in mind one has to ask what, if anything, was being covered up here. One strange moment was depicted when the translator trying to get Wai Phyo to answer questions ran his fingers through Wai Phyo’s hair, a technique it’s fair to say has never appeared in any other crime documentaries.

Sean McAnna the Scottish man who accused the Montriwat and his police friend of trying to kill him before he left the island was also featured. He said, in a clip of a BBC interview, that he believed the mafia were looking for a scape goat and told him that he would hang himself in the island and they would watch him hang.

As well as the case of Mr Miller and Miss Witheridge the case of Christina Annesley, who died in January 2015 shortly after arriving on the island was covered.

During his interview her father said that he had no idea how or why she died, he was baffled as to why no toxicology report was ever made when the Thai police said his daughter died from a fatal mixture of alcohol and medicine for a chest infection.

He said he would only like to visit the island to see where his daughter had spent her final days but beyond that had no wish to be anywhere near the island. He also showed disgust that the last man to be seen with his daughter alive was never questioned by the police who claim to be carrying out in depth investigations into the seemingly endless deaths of foreigners.

No mention was made that Christina Annesley died in a resort owned by Montriwat Tuwichian, the very man who was implicated in the murders at the start of the Witheridge, Miller investigation.

Another case that was discussed was that of Nick Pearson, who after being assisted to his room with a bad knee by his father at the end of an evening out, ended up dead in the ocean.

The police believe he fell from his room but as his mother pointed out, it was a 50 foot drop, there was a huge boulder in the way preventing him from falling to his death where his body was discovered and his body had no broken bones. Incidentally the key to his room was found in his room so it is unlikely his trip to the ocean was planned.

A brief mention was made of Dimitri Povse, the 29 year old French man who managed to hang himself with a shoe lace with his hands tied tightly behind his back and an even more brief mention of Luke Miller was made, the British man police suggested had died jumping into a swimming pool, a fact that even one of the first paramedics on the scene disputes.

One thing that rings bells certainly in the cases of Miss Witherdige and Mr Miller and Luke Miller is the lack of CCTV evidence. Many cameras it has been said were not working on either night and those that were belong to private businesses so there has never been a legal requirement for the footage to be handed over to the police.

Hardly encouraging if Koh Tao wish to repair their reputation for shoddy police investigations and instil any kind of confidence in the parents of young travellers.

The message from the documentary was clear, parents should do all in their power to discourage their children from visiting an island where six westerners have died in just over two years and seemingly nobody is happy with the investigations from the police.

The CH4 documentary focused on 5 Brits and one French man, they made no mention of the Swiss man who went missing snorkelling just after the murders of Hannah and David. When investigators looked for his body they found a white man floating in the waters of Koh Phangan, that turned out not to be him, the body found floating near

Donsak turned out not to be him either, however the third body found near Langsuan were the remains of Hans Peter Suter a man who had just completed his PADI Divemaster course – a strong swimmer who in order to gain his qualification would have completed his rescue diver course too.

No explanation was ever given as to who the other two sets of remains belonged to. There was also no mention of the Burmese lady who was the daughter of the beach cleaner, and first on the scene. Although the authorities like to believe she left Thailand to return to her village in Myanmar, locals believe the mortal remains of a woman found on a rubbish dump in Koh Tao belonged to her.

The trial of Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo was hardly touched on, certainly no mention was made of international news agencies scrambling for new translators when theirs had been scared off by the mafia, or the fact that at one point the trial was delayed by half a day due to no translators being prepared to come forward.

No mention was made of local rumours about who actually committed the crimes or of the fact you would be hard pushed to find anybody on Koh Tao, Koh Phangan or Koh Samu who believe the Burmese men are guilty.

Koh Tao investigationWith, no doubt, only sketchy information being offered from those in the know, the CH4 documentary went some way to bringing the situation in Koh Tao to light, and for anybody who has not visited or lived on the islands it would have been a shocking insight to what on the outside looks like paradise.

However nothing new came out for those who have knowledge or live on the islands where murders very often go unsolved, and sometimes are not even investigated.

Perhaps the next film crew brave enough to scratch the surface of the so called paradise islands in the Gulf should also investigate Samui and the murder of a Turkish man known as Ali in Chaweng, caught on CCTV in 2015, Volker Schwarges, 2014, a German Bar owner in Chaweng, whose murder by Samui teenagers was caught on CCTV but not one of them spent a single night behind bars.

They may also want to look into the headless corpse that washed up in Trat this year and the bodies of one male and one female who recently washed up near Donsak as well as dozens of unexplained foreign deaths that are reported on a weekly basis round the country.

But perhaps as the Mayor of Koh Tao pointed out, foreigners forget this is not their country, they do whatever they like, and this often causes their deaths, it’s all about fate……………………………….the sad fact is the fate of the friends and families of those lost on the islands is that they will never get closure while so much uncertainly hovers over the suspicious deaths.

The fate of the two young Burmese is yet to be seen, if they are as innocent as many locals believe their nightmare is only just beginning as they sit, ever hopeful their legal team will one day prove their innocence, behind bars on death row in the notorious Bankwang prison known to locals as the Bangkok Hilton!

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo – innocent in the 'trial by social media'

Wai-Phyo-Zaw-Lin.jpg

SAMUI: -- On the 4th of October 2014 two 21 year old migrant workers from Myanmar, Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were charged with murdering two British backpackers on Siree Beach in Koh Tao.

Chillingly, this came as little surprise to ex-pat residents, not only on Koh Tao but in Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Wai Phyo Zaw LinNot because the ex-pat population of the three popular island holiday destinations in the Gulf of Thailand knew the two young men, or their friends or indeed their families, but because mutterings of “you wait, they will fit Burmese up for this crime”.

Interestingly these rumours started circulating before Montriwat Tuwichian had even been put in the clear after being identified as a suspect by Pol Lt-Gen Panya Mamen and arrested.

Montriwat’s nephew Nomsod, the son of the village headman Worapan Tuwichian was also identified as a suspected by the General, who said both men were captured on CCTV and there was enough evidence to implicate them in the murders.

Rich and powerful players not only on the small diving Mecca of Koh Tao but with powerful connections to police, prosecutors, judges and the army it came as no surprise to anybody who has spent more than a fleeting visit to the islands that they were soon cleared of all involvement in the case.

By the time prime minister Prayut Chan o cha had announced that he could not guarantee the safety of good looking western women in bikinis and that no Thai could have committed such a heinous crime the local communities were already drawing breath wondering who would be unfortunate enough to become the fall guys for this crime, the mutterings between ex residents reached as far as New Zealand, Scandinavia, the UK and Australia.

Zaw-Lin-in-court.jpg

They did not have to wait long. Little over two week after the horrific crimes that shook the nation as well as the rest of the world took place Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were arrested and it was announced they had admitted to the crimes.

Behind closed doors murmurs of disbelief were rife, people were discussing the case in hushed voices and out the earshot of anybody connected to police or what has been termed in the press as the local mafia.

Nobody was shouting in the streets, nobody was protesting, in fact nobody was doing anything other than standing in quiet astonishment that two tiny, young, naive looking Burmese men could have committed the most hideous crime the local community had seen to date.

The other interesting fact is that at this time, nobody was breathing a sigh of relief, nobody was congratulating the police on their investigation and nobody was having a go at the hundreds of other members of the Burmese community as one might expect when members of an ethnic minority deem it appropriate to massacre two innocent young travellers.

No witnesses came forward to verify the police’s claims, no character witnesses came forward to perhaps tell their stories about the two men and their dodgy dealings, aggressive behaviour, drunken violence or the hatred of women they would have to possess in order to commit such a crime.

Nobody said anything, it all went eerily quiet until all hell broke loose on social media as over 700,000 followers of the Facebook Page CSI LA found a voice and produced way more evidence in defence of the boys than was ever seen in court.

With graphic images of the crime scene available to anybody with more than a fleeing interest in the case thanks to the police’s complete lack of due diligence in securing the crime scene and police and rescue workers feverishly uploading the ghastly photos of the scene to Facebook pages and other social media sites, amateur sleuths for the first time could draw their own conclusions with actual evidence direct from the scene within hours of the bodies being discovered.

this-way-that-way.jpg

Did over half a million people join together to try to prove Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo did not commit these diabolical crimes because they knew them? Because they had met them?

Because they had lived on Koh Tao and been in their company previously? No, it was because for the first time, thanks to social media, people who have experience of Justice Thai style could come together and have a voice.

With false names, untraceable IP addresses and the cloak of anonymity a new community formed and CSI LA and Thai Visa was buzzing with claims of mafia, corruption and scapegoating that clearly is nothing new in the minds of anybody who has any connection with the southern Thai islands.

No mention was made of what a great relief it was that two psychopathic killers were no longer on the loose, and the beaches of Koh Tao were once again safe to enjoy.

All we saw was outrage that once again those in power had managed to ‘get away with murder’ except this time the online community were standing up in defence of two men 99% of them had never encountered.

Never before had so many people come together to discuss a crime committed on Thai soil. The online community analysed the photographs of the ‘running man’ seen going to and from the crime scene during the small hours of the morning.

Interestingly Montriwat first claimed to be the man on the CCTV TV but later police confirmed it was Wai Phyo, despite the fact that Wai Phyo has a small thinning patch of hair that did not show up on the images, and that in fact Nomsod has a rather than more passing resemblance to the images seen and that during the court case an expert testified that thanks the to the unique gait of the man, it could not have been the defendant.

The online community asked questions such as if the two were guilty why were no witnesses coming forward, why was there a shroud of silence on Koh Tao?

Why was everybody afraid to speak and other questions were raised to such as why did some of the crime scene photos after the two bodies had been removed from the beach show the victims clothes strewn all over the sand when photos on the same beach that contained the body of David clearly showed their clothes piled neatly on a rock.

Why were Hannah’s clothes never tested for DNA and where did the clothes go? Why was David wearing one sock? Why would anybody going for a midnight swim or a romantic moment with a beau on the beach remove all his clothes other than one black sock?

Why was the hoe moved from the scene of the crime and then later placed back there. How could any crime scene produce concrete evidence of the kind suitable to sentence two men to death when dozens of people had trampled all over it.

Pictures of Nomsod soon popped up online that appeared to prove he was at his university in Bangkok and had not been on the island at the time of the crimes, however many found the date and times appeared to have been tampered with on the CCTV images designed to prove his whereabouts.

Images of burns and scalds found their way into the public domain that many believe proved police brutality and were evidence of torture.

Back on the ground the discussions of who committed the crimes were no longer held behind doors as the local community became aware of the fears of those who had taken their own look into the case.

The general feeling went from a fear of speaking to total outrage that two young men appeared to be taking the fall for a crime they had no involvement in, and if they really had been fitted up for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, then was anybody safe?

Even local police were speaking to their ex-pat friends freely admitting they also believed the men behind bars had nothing to do with the crime and congratulating those who helped them.

Support for the two Burmese was strong on all three islands. Groups of Ex-pats rallied round to support them and later their mothers who arrived on the islands to support them during the court case that stretched over three months.

With some fear still in place donations were handed over in secret from members of the Koh Samui community who were still too afraid to show their support in public for fear of reprisal, and mutterings of “I can’t be seen to help, I have to live here” left the lips of many raising funds to support the who men as well as those endlessly researching the case in a hope of being the one who found the missing link that would give the men back their freedom.

These silent supporters came from every walk of life, every industry and every community on the islands united in their wish to see real justice done, not another case of what they believed to be the rich getting away with murder and the reputation of the islands being saved by who hapless innocents who would become the 3rd and 4th victims of the hideous crimes.

One small team of Ex-pats were less afraid, visited the two men in jail, passed on the endless messages of support from the islands and the rest of the world, gave moral and financial support and later supported the mothers of the two men, who had long since retracted the confessions they say were made under duress, proving food, housing and transport to and from the prison and the court hearings.

99% of those who got involved with the ‘online case’ support the two men the remaining 1% claim the right men are behind bars. While trial by social media bears no weight in the court there is no doubt that Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo draw great strength from behind bars knowing that hundreds and thousands of people believe in their innocence, and a great many of them continue to fight to prove it.

German lady who loved Thailand gets her last request

SURAT THANI:-- An old German lady in love with Koh Samui and Thailand asked her landlady if she could die there in her rented room. The landlady, thinking not much of it, just said "of course."

Five days later the 85 year old woman was found dead on the bed in her room, reports Daily News.

Samui police found the body of Conradi Waltratmagot (transliterated) lying on the bed in her room at the property in the Ang Thong sub-district. A packet of cigarettes and an almost full bottle of pills was found on a table beside the bed. There were no signs of foul play. The lady was known to be an asthmatic.

The body was found by Pornthip Chuto,64, a maid who the dead lady employed to look after her. She said that Conradi had complained of a stomach ache and gone to bed after taking seven aspirin. When she went to check on her later Tuesday she found her gasping then she passed out. CPR failed to revive her and hospital staff who were alerted soon found her dead.

The owner of the room named only as Janjira said that five days before her death Conradi had asked for permission if it was alright to die in her room because she loved Samui and Thailand so much.

"She had already been renting here for eight months," Janjira told police, "and seeing as she was old I didn't think much of it. So I just said, of course."

An autopsy is to be carried out and the German embassy is to be contacted so that the lady who loved Thailand is reunited with her relatives.
