Samui ablaze in worst fire in decades

SURAT THANI:-- One of the worst forest fires seen on Koh Samui in years has burnt out some 60 rai of land.
The fire took hold from evening on Tuesday and burnt through the night. The area is between Bo Phut and Mae Nam, reports TNAMcot.
The fire was difficult to fight because access to the hilly area can only be made on tracks for motorcycles. It affect a wide stretch from Phu Khao Ork to Phu Khao Phra.
Many people on the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan and locals shared pictures of the fire on Facebook and the Line application.
It was reported that it may be the worst fire in the area for fifty years.
Samui district chief Paiboon Omark said that it is suspected that the blaze had been caused by locals burning scrub and he called on the police to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
